(or: the stat screen you probably ignored at first)
Stats are one of those things in SwordxStaff that quietly matter a lot — but don’t always explain themselves very well.
I’ve seen a lot of people asking questions about them lately, and honestly, I get it. When I first started, I stared at the stat screen like it owed me money. So consider this me doing a bit of the heavy lifting for you.
I play a Duelist, so some of this will naturally lean toward physical builds — but I’ll also touch on a few stats that matter just as much for mages (and honestly, everyone).
Let’s start with the basics.

Physical Mastery & Physical Resistance
(The bread and butter stats)
Physical Mastery increases the physical damage you deal. Against enemies of the same level, it translates into a percentage-based damage increase.
For example, at my current stats, I’m getting about a 10.6% increase. Yes, my numbers are a little scuffed. No, you don’t get to judge. Moving on.
Physical Resistance does the opposite — it reduces the physical damage you take from enemies of the same level.
If you’re on a Duelist or Warrior path, these two stats form the foundation of how hard you hit and how well you survive getting hit back.
Effect Hit Rate & Effect Resistance
(Debuffs, ailments, and “why did that stick?”)
Effect Hit Rate increases your chance to successfully apply debuffs or status ailments to enemies of the same level.
Effect Resistance reduces your chance of receiving those same debuffs and ailments.
These stats matter more than they first appear, depending on the content.
Accuracy, Crit Rate, Crit Damage, and Crit Resistance
(The “damage feels good” stats)
Accuracy reduces an enemy’s chance to block your attacks.
Then you’ve got the crit trio:
Crit Rate — how often you crit
Crit Damage — how hard those crits hit
Crit Resistance — how much incoming crit damage you resist
Together, these stats determine how explosive (or how survivable) combat feels.
For Duelists especially, these stats are huge. But early on, they can feel painfully low — and that’s normal.
Early Game Reality: You Can’t Specialize Yet (and That’s Okay)
At the beginning, stat points and good gear are limited. You won’t be perfectly optimized, and you’re not supposed to be.
What does help is flexibility.
I keep extra gear pieces around for different situations:
One setup for higher crit rate
Another for rarity acquisition
Another for survivability
Stat priorities change depending on what you’re doing.
If you’re cruising through PvP and then suddenly a Knight turns you into a suggestion — that’s not failure. That’s information. Build something that counters tankiness. Adjust. Swap gear. You’ll get there with time and planning.
Affinities & Aegis
(The stats nobody explains)
These were the ones that confused me the most when I started.
Light Affinity in SwordxStaffLight Aegis in SwordxStaff
Affinities increase the damage you deal with skills of a specific element. Aegis reduces the damage you take from that element.
For example:
Light Affinity → more Light damage
Light Aegis → less Light damage taken
These stats matter for every class, because every class branch uses multiple elements.
And yes — I’m counting physical as an element. If you disagree, step on a Lego.
Relics: Where These Stats Really Come From
Affinities and Aegis are most easily gained through relics, and you can build them up faster than you might expect.
If possible:
Focus relic upgrades on your main damage element
Build resistances for elements you struggle against
This gives you both offensive power and survivability without needing perfect gear rolls.
Elemental Mastery
(Mostly mage-coded, but not only)
Elemental Mastery increases elemental damage and shows up frequently on gear.
While it’s more important for mages, it can still be useful for:
Element-focused warrior builds
Situational swaps when fighting specific content
I recommend keeping at least one spare piece with Elemental Mastery — even if it’s slightly weaker overall. Swapping temporarily for the right fight is always better than brute-forcing the wrong stats.
You can always put your main gear back on after. I promise. It’s allowed.
A Small Closing Thought
Stats in SwordxStaff aren’t about perfection — they’re about context.
Different fights ask different questions. Different modes reward different answers. And early on, feeling underpowered doesn’t mean you built wrong — it usually just means you haven’t had time yet.
If nothing else, I hope this helped make the stat screen feel a little less hostile.
